The Best Watch Ever Made

The other day I bought a new watch, a Certina DS-8. Clean dial, great fit, works perfectly when I want a more classic look. The purchase sparked a debate with some friends about which watches were actually good. They threw around names like Luminox, Bell & Ross, Rolex... and look, those are fine watches. But none of them can compete with what I genuinely believe is the best line of watches ever created, the culmination of centuries of horological development, a symbol of the digital and industrial era. The Casio GW-5600 and its family.

So why is it the perfect watch?

For starters, it is a G-Shock. People say these watches are indestructible, and while I have personally broken a couple of them, there is no question they are tough, built to withstand serious shocks and up to 10 bar of water pressure. On top of that, they are solar powered, so you never have to crack the case open and risk breaking the seal. They are also radio-controlled, meaning they sync their time via low-frequency radio signals. DST changes? Handled automatically. Accuracy? ±0 seconds if updated daily, more precise than any mechanical watch at any price point. And all of this for under 200 euros.

I know digital watches are not considered elegant. But maybe that is the point. A G-Shock is not trying to be a Rolex. It is a piece of functional engineering that reflects exactly where we are: a world that values precision, resilience, and not fussing with batteries.

A cheap, nearly indestructible, perfectly accurate watch that you will never charge or service. That is a hard case to argue against.
